Join us for a relaxed evening discussing IR cases over cheese and wine!

Like a book club, we will choose a case to start our discussions off (usually based on an interesting factual scenario, novel legal principle and/or really good writing).

Our third case is Jenny Yang v FCS Business Service Pty Ltd [2020] FWC 4560. We will be exploring the narrow circumstances when an employee is considered to have been forced to resign because of the employer's conduct, and why the facts in this case led to a finding of (unfair) dismissal.

Case Club is also a space to share your own favourite cases and discuss the decisions that made you think. Case suggestions for future case clubs can be emailed to irsocietywa@gmail.com.

Brainiacs, Banter and Belgian Beer, brings academics and practitioners together for a relaxed evening of insightful stories, good-humoured discussion and informal networking.

Our guest “brainiacs” will share what they believe industrial relations practitioners should know, drawing on their own research and experience to challenge conventional wisdom and explore ideas that can improve ER practice.

Expect engaging stories, fresh perspectives, friendly provocation and plenty of opportunities to continue the conversation over a Belgian beer (or your beverage of choice) and delicious food!

2026 Women in Industrial Relations Breakfast

The Industrial Relations Society of Western Australia is delighted to invite you to our annual Women in Industrial Relations Breakfast! This year, we will be enjoying our breakfast at Ambrose Estate on the Wembley golf course, hearing from three wonderful speakers on the careers they've built in the field.

Speakers:

Agata Reimers - National HR and IR Director, Fluor Australia

Emma Douglas - Legal and Industrial Officer, Australian Workers Union

Kathy Reid - Managing Partner, MinterEllison

As always, we will be raising funds for a female-focused charity at this event. This year, we are proud to support Dress For Success, a WA organisation empowering women to achieve economic independence.

$5 from each ticket sold will be donated to Dress For Success as well as all proceeds from our raffle.

Please bring cash if you would like to purchase raffle tickets on the day.

IRSWA Advocacy Course 2026 (20 Nov 2026)

The Industrial Relations Society of Western Australia is please to announce the the IRSWA Advocacy Course for 2026.

This course is designed for human resources, industrial relations practitioners and lawyers to develop and enhance their skills in the art of advocacy.

The program is a skill based program directed at advocacy skills for commission appearances. The course is a great opportunity for new advocates looking to learn and obtain practical experience and experienced advocates seeking to refresh their skills.

With WA Commission Members adjudicating and supported by interstate facilitators (Chris O'Grady KC and Leigh Howard, barrister both from the Victorian Bar) who facilitate this course for other Industrial Relations Societies. This course is not to me missed!

Limited spots are available with first preference to IRSWA Members.

Costs include course material, catering, refreshments and networking opportunities.
