This event will provide an opportunity for members to meet and mingle informally with members of the Francis Burt Chambers and hear Karen Vernon and Tony Power discuss issues of advocacy interest to IR Practitioners.

IRSWA invites members and guests to a Panel Discussion titled "Issues in Advocacy of Interest to IR PractitionersDate: Thursday 27th August 2015   Venue: Francis Burt Chambers Level 15, 77 St George's Terrace, PerthTime: Registration 5:30pm. Seminar from 6:00pm - 7:15pm, followed by questions and refreshments     Registration is essential. This event is free for members and a small charge for non members. Please register at  IRSWA Thanks the Francis Burt Chambers for sponsoring this event   Topic: ‘Issues in Advocacy of Interest to IR Practitioners’ Presenters include:  Karen Vernon - BarristerKaren completed a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in literature in 1989 followed by a Bachelor of Laws in 1993 at UWA.  To avoid the danger of becoming a perpetual student, she completed articles at Phillips Fox in 1994 and was admitted to legal practice in 1995. From 1996 to 1997 Karen worked at Butcher Paull & Calder as a general litigation solicitor. In 1997 she became an associate of Arthur Metaxas & Co before becoming a partner of the firm of Metaxas & Vernon from 1999 to 2003. She practiced in the areas of commercial litigation, vocational regulation and industrial relations. In 2003 Karen moved to London and worked as an employment lawyer at William Sturges in 2004. On returning to Perth, Karen joined the Commonwealth DPP as a senior legal officer in the corporate prosecutions branch. In 2005 Karen began her current practice as a barrister.  She works primarily in the areas of commercial litigation, criminal law, vocational regulation and industrial relations, and still has a sense of humour!Tony Power - BarristerTony was admitted to practice in WA in 1981 and elected to the WA Bar Association in 1999. He has a broad practice encompassing most areas of the law, including employment, industrial, discrimination and workers compensation law. He has practised as an advocate in all Courts (except the Family Court) and in a number of specialist tribunals and jurisdictions. Tony is an instructor with the Australian Advocacy Institute and has for many years been involved in advocacy training for the Law Society, the University of Western Australia, the University of Notre Dame Australia and Murdoch University, where he has also presided in a number of courses and competitions as a judge and arbitrator. In addition to practising as an advocate and teaching advocacy, he has also had an opportunity to observe it from the other side of the bar table during his appointments as a Commissioner of the District Court of Western Australia. Tony is listed in Doyles Guide as one of Perth’s leading employment barristers.
