The Patron's Dinner is an annual event hosted by the IRSWA Patron Jack Gregor where an invited speaker provides an after dinner speech at a fine dining restaurant.
The Patron of the Industrial Relations Society of WA, Mr Jack Gregor, on behalf of the Society, would like to invite you to attend the 2019 Patron's Dinner to listen to this outstanding speaker.
Our Patrons dinner is now in its eleventh year and over the years our Patron Jack Gregor has searched for speakers who have made innovative change in their enterprises and are outstanding leaders in business and within our community. This year’s speaker is Dr Sophie Davison, the Deputy Chief Psychiatrist of Western Australia.
Topic: Trauma and the Workplace
Many people in the workplace have experienced trauma in their lives and some experience trauma at work. I will discuss the impact that trauma can have on people and what approaches, at a personal and organisational level, are helpful in minimising the impact of trauma and preventing inadvertently retraumatising people. I will draw on the literature about trauma informed human services and consider how some of the principles could be helpful in the workplace.
Bio of speaker
Dr Davison is also a Consultant Psychiatrist for the State Forensic Mental Health Service and Adjunct Clinical Senior Lecturer at UWA. She trained in medicine at Cambridge University and completed her training in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital in London and has an MPhil from Cambridge in criminology and is a specialist in Forensic Psychiatry.
She has worked in a variety of clinical settings and as Deputy Chief Psychiatrist she assists the Chief Psychiatrist in overseeing the standards of care provided by mental health services in WA. Throughout her career she has developed a particular interest in the effect of trauma on mental health and the way in which services and organisations can avoid traumatising or re-traumatising people and mitigate the effects of trauma.
